I am working on a series of paintings using found images (paintings, photographs and objects) that are combined and altered, sometimes to suggest a narrative or allegory. I found the underlying painting on eBay listed as "portrait of a woman in a blue dress" by Helen Butler who "appeared to have lived in New York City when she was younger and attended Art College... Butler may have traveled abroad. Some of her paintings have an African and European influence. Some even look very industrial." I speculate this painting might have been a self-portrait. Now only the face remains outlined against an obliterated background, an altered profile containing and surrounded by found photographs to suggest an extended family - sisters, a favorite daughter or her younger self, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. |
