Kathy Levine
Being a part of nature and living in NYC, I find myself drawn to the natural elements - what we all share in common and how we relate to our artificial surroundings. In “Rift”, a giant cross-section of a tree trunk is split down the middle. On one side, is nature in its pure state. On the other, are scenes from the urban environment. At first, I thought that the natural side would look beautiful and the urban side ugly. As the piece progressed, I discovered that I was finding beauty in the city. Both sides became fascinating and alluring in their own ways. It made me realize that the city and nature are not opposites but instead can co-exist and are both places of inspiration, vitality, beauty and complexity.
