Simone Ver Eecke has recently completed her BA in Studio Art at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Her work is not reliant on one solid medium or process, which creates unlimited creative possibilities. "My focus in my work has always been color. Even with my obscure Honor's project I managed to sneak in color, when ultimately every piece could have been done in black and white and still make the same point--but what's the fun in that?" In her senior year of college, Simone completed an Honors Thesis in Studio Art entitled, The Art of Composing Chaos: A visual experiment in automatism. This project, highly influenced by a large range of surrealist thinkers such as Max Ernst, Cai Guo Qiang, and the contemporary composer John Cage, dove into the philosophical, fundamental and sociological definitions of 'What is art?' Besides the written thesis, the project culminated in an art show that displayed her year's culmination of automatic paintings spanning from painting blindfolded to painting by shooting at paint with semi-automatic riffles. Aside from her painting aspirations, Simone's other focus is photography. This more modern art medium has been a highly experimental source for her. "Right now, I am really into light. I like to go to different places at night and take long exposures without a tripod--it's almost as if I am ignoring their forms and capturing some sort of metaphysical presence." Simone still considers herself a developing artist; her work seems to flow in every direction possible. Simone is proud to be born and raised in Victorian Flatbush. |
